Shaw/ Howard you really are changing

Dear readers, please be patient with me I decided to give the “posting by mobile phone” a whirl.

I can’t exactly remember if it was a month or more ago when I noticed the sign from Wanda’s salon had moved but soon after seeing the sign at Wanda’s  a lot of activity began.   A fence was place around the vacant lot by the metro, loud banging noises started and this morning I walked through scaffolding on 7th Street. I read on the LeDroit Park listserv that apartments are being built as well as the United Negro College Fund will also be on the same block.  It will be interesting to see the changes but even more interesting the opinions from surrounding neighbors.  “My” kids that used to hang out on the block have already left— I wonder who else might leave?

Bringing NWtoSE back to focus

Dear Readers-

I am re-vamping NWtoSE to make it a resource for everyone in the District with posts like “the process of getting food stamps” to “the hippest place that has positive vibes to chill in DC.”  I am also going to attempt to give links about opportunities that are specific to NW, SE, SW, and NE.  I  hope that people staying in NW will hop on the 90 and head on over to SE and visa versa and people all over DC will branch out and get to know DC.

Keep checking back for updates and please let me know what YOU want to hear about!

Best-

NWtoSE

SNUS

RJ Reynolds you have really done it this time. . . to make a product that one can barely pronounce without basically needing to sign-up for a round of speech therapy I unveil . . . . (drum roll please)

SNUS

Now you can “receive pleasure everywhere” Camel SNUS comes in an array of flavors to KILL YOU. I discovered SNUS in a local Newspaper recently when out of the corner of my eye I noticed some flashy ad hanging out of the newspaper. After my worst fears were confirmed when I spotted the Camel, I simply took all the newspapers to my room, and removed all the ads which also included coupons that were being offered for this deplorable item “SNUS.” I kept the newspapers as well because I decided that my building didn’t need a newspaper that accepted tobacco money in their lives. :) (I can hear the anger already of people I know ha ha ha) I have since been trying to use my coupon which is “Buy a Camel product and get 1 FREE TIN of Camel SNUS” but I have yet to find a store owner that will redeem my coupon. At first I tried CVS (many know how I feel about CVS- if not you can click here to learn more) but CVS actually does NOT sell SNUS. It is in fact the Mom and Pop stores that carry SNUS.

One mom and pop store owner when questioned about SNUS in the foggy bottom area said “they are just a pain to redeem and not worth the hassle.”
He continued to say “Most people don’t even carry that junk [the coupon] around anymore.
“YAY I thought!!!!! RJ will do anything to entice children with his flavored SNUS!!!! DEPLORABLE!!!

I also attempted to get onto their website and I guess they have to send you some kind of code to make sure you are legal. . . so that is positive. Grrrhhhhh is all I have to say as of now.

On April 28, 2006 RJ Reynolds released Camel Snus in Portland Oregon and Austin Texas; the smokeless tobacco product expanded further in eight states, and in May 2008 RJ Reynolds and Camel Snus dove into the major markets of Los Angele’s; Chicago; New York; Atlanta; Washington, D.C. Camel Snus used print media to advertise until February 2008, when they decide that print media was not a viable marketing source. Camels Snus offers the spitless pouch in four flavors: original, frost, spice and mellow (mix between frost and spice). Even though Snus is not associated with lung cancer since it is not inhaled; studies show an increase in pancreatic cancer and heart disease from non-tobacco users, although these risks are 50% less for snus users than cigarette users. In December 2008, the Spice and Original flavors were replaced with a single Mellow flavor. In 2009, Camel Snus will be launched nationally. The newest version of Camel snus contains 8mg of nicotine per pouch, according to an RJ Reynolds spokesman.- http://tobaccoproducts.org/index.php/Camel_Snus

To Arm or Not?

A couple weeks ago the Foggy Bottom Grocery Store on the George Washington University campus was robbed at gunpoint, the perpetrator made off with $500 cash. . .
Thank goodness no one was hurt!!!!
I think the thing that concerns me the most about this incident is that it was almost like no one in this area thought that someone with a gun was “allowed” to make their way over to “this” area.
After the incident there has been a buzz on campus about “arming” the George Washington University Police. . . of course as a student of public health my friends and I have been discussing the idea and hands down the answer is NO WAY. You may draw you own conclusions by the following crime logs:

10/16/08 – Thurston Hall – 4:09 a.m. – case closed

GW University Police Training:
Certification Training

  • Defensive Driving
  • Defensive Tactics
  • OCAT (Pepper Spray)
  • PR-24 Baton
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Campus Public Safety Institute (Eight weeks of Academy training)
  • District of Columbia, Metropolitan Police Department
Academy training for recruit officers lasts for 28 weeks. During the first month, recruit officers live on site at the Academy (excluding weekends). MPD recruit officers complete a full program of physical endurance training, classroom training, and firearms training to prepare them for the challenges of being a police officer. The subjects covered include laws of arrest, search and seizure, criminal law, traffic regulations, human relations, community policing, and ethics. In addition, recruit officers receive skills training in firearms, operation of emergency police vehicles, self-defense, advanced first aid, and much more. MPD officers serve an 18-month probationary period, which includes the 28 weeks spent in the Metropolitan Police Academy.

Basically. . . the typical crime on the George Washington University Campus does not require that of a gun on campus- and I really do believe in this case LESS IS MORE . . . furthermore on any given day there are handfuls of MPD cops . . . one officer told me once “Your area has the most officers in the District because so many jurisdictions are covered. . . ” Personally I can think of ONE University Police Officer that I could trust with a gun, and until then I will risk it with my pepper spray, my defense training, and all jokes aside my street sense.
