National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day ’12 #NBHAAD Reaching Black Men through Unions

Every year I post information about National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, please read my past posts on HIV/AIDS, condoms and where you can go to get tested.

I am always interested in how to reach the most men with public health messages.    So I found the below YouTube video interesting (a little bit dry) but interesting discussing how to reach men through Labor Unions.  While working on my masters degree in Public Health I focused some research on a Quit Smoking campaign for WMATA rail employees.  I never actually submitted a proposal to Metro but, the health risks among Metro employee’s are very high when you consider what employee’s are exposed to, and daily risks.  Union’s could effect massive health behavior change among men in many sectors from police to fire to transportation etc.

What do you think?

World AIDS Day, how about EVERYDAY!?

Yesterday, December 1 was World AIDS Day. In the HIV/AIDS Public Health Community December 1st is THE DAY to raise awareness around HIV/AIDS and to promote testing.

3.2 % of DC’s population over the age of 12 are infected with HIV.  Among persons living with HIV/AIDS, 72.0% are men, 75.6% black and 71.3% are currently over the age of 40. Overall, men who have sex with men is the leading mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS accounting for 37.3% of living cases, followed by heterosexual contact and injection drug use with 27.0% and 17.4%, respectively. Distribution of HIV/AIDS cases by mode of transmission also differs by race. (Source: DC HIV/AIDS Administration)

Basically this post is short and simple, I think that World AIDS Day should be every day.  People should talk about HIV/AIDS, std’s and sexual health every day and get tested regularly!

Want to know how to not contract HIV/AIDS or STD’s?  Don’t have sex.

“The Other City”

I  can’t wait for the soon-to-be-released documentary about DC and the horrors of the HIV rate in my City.  “The Other City” appears to depict the reason why I started this blog NWtoSE.  I hope that the world is able to view this documentary and see the city I know and the city I love!

This is the story of The Other City –”Washington” to most, “D.C.” to its residents — a city that boasts a higher rate of HIV/AIDS than some countries in Africa. . . “

Tell your sister, sistah, friend, gf about today. . . National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) – March 10

It is too often in DC that we think HIV/AIDS  is not “our” problem.   LADIES it is OK to WAIT for the “right” guy, to say “No,” be safe, get tested. . . and hey watch your sisters backs.  Ask a woman you care about “when was the last time you were checked? are you being safe?”  Let them know you CARE about their health.

BE NOSY and get in your friends business . . you will never know how your positive concern may make a difference!

  • African American women are most affected.

  • HIV/AIDS is the leading cause of death for African American women aged 25 to 34.

Council Member Michael Brown, Council Member-at-Large discusses the importance of HIV testing in the District and endorses his support for the event. Thank you Council Member Brown for your support!
Council Member Muriel Bowser respresenting Ward 4 expressed her support for HIV/AIDS testing Day as well as her support for testing among women specifically for African American Women and particularly in the District who are disporportionatly affected by the disease. This is something that I continually try to discuss in my blog. Women need to empower themselves by protecting themselves.
It seems that I always have a sign or am dressed up as something!
A Big Thank you to the Carl Vogel Center for Testing all day! There was a line all day!
JanaB aka NWtoSE & Mr. Chris Bryant, Executive Director of Street Wize Foundation
I absolutely love seeing Chris everywhere! His organization “is a youth based community education group that focuses on educating youth ranging from 14 to 26 about health issues that will help them make positive decisions. We provide youth with relevant education programs and materials that will help prevent them from engaging in risky behaviors that will negatively effect their health and community.” http://www.streetwizefoundation.org/sw_mission.html
Many don’t realize the affects that smoking has on the immune system and how it compromises the bodies ability to fight disease. A big thank you to Charles my friend at DC Tobacco Free Families for coming out to share information about how to QUIT!

HIV/AIDS is disproportionately affecting minority populations AND the District of Columbia:

US:

  • HIV has a devastating toll on African Americans, who account for almost half of new HIV diagnoses (49% in 2006)
  • Latinos account for 20% of new HIV diagnoses (18% in 2006)http://cdc.gov/Features/HIVtesting/

DC:

  • At the end of 2007, a total of 15,120 people were living with HIV/AIDS in the District, accounting for about 3% of all District residents.

Remember these numbers are people that have been tested and have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control. The numbers ARE HIGHER.

  • District residents age 40-49 are the most significantly impacted by HIV/AIDS with over 7% of residents in this age group living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Blacks continue to be the most severely impacted with over 4% of black residents infected with HIV followed by Hispanics (1.9%) and whites (1.4%).
  • Black males have the highest burden of disease with 6.5 % of all black males in the District living with HIV/AIDS.

This high rate is due to Men having sex with men (MSM). We [the DC community] need to BEGIN to stop stigmatizing this dire state that too many DC men are dealing with. . . and too many ALONE.
More data can be accessed through the DC Department of Health HIV/AIDS administration 2008 Epidemiology Update here

KNOW your status get tested! If you live in DC come out on Monday and get tested at this event click here for details. If you are outside of DC or can’t make it out on Monday go to hivtest.org to find the closest testing site and more education about HIV/AIDS!
