This bill will now go back to the House and then will head back to the President where he is most likely to sign the bill into law.

What does this mean?

Main provisions of legislation giving the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate the production and marketing of tobacco products:

•Creates a tobacco control center within the FDA and gives the FDA authority to regulate the content, marketing and sale of tobacco products to protect public health.

•Requires tobacco companies and importers to reveal all product ingredients and seek FDA approval for any new tobacco products.

•Allows the FDA to change tobacco product content to protect the public health.

•Bans the use of flavors, including candies and fruit flavors, in tobacco products.

•Calls for new rules that would prevent sales to minors except through direct, face-to-face exchanges between a retailer and a consumer. Limits advertising that could attract young smokers.

•Strengthens warning labels.

•Bars the use of expressions such as “light, “mild” or “low” that give the impression that a tobacco product poses less of a health risk.

NO MORE BLACK & MILDS. . .

Check out this young man that is also passionate about making sure that Tobacco Products are regulated!

I am back in Utah (LOWEST SMOKING RATE IN THE COUNTRY!) for a few weeks for the holidays and of course I can’t stay away from my usual Tobacco Control/Condom Access.
I connected in Denver on my way to Salt Lake (which I decided to name “Vanillaland” coming from “Chocolate City”) I was shocked to see that cigarettes were sold in the Airport. Maybe I never really paid attention to the sales of Tobacco products in the airport but o
f course I couldn’t help out strike up a conversation with the cashiers. Two nice young men of the Ethiopian decent, one of the young man’s mother was actually from the DC area! He was telling me how he used to work at 7-11 and sold Black and Milds and how he thought that they were NOT dangerous and DID not cause cancer.

I asked him “Why do think that that these mini-cigars are not harmful?”
He stated “They are called MILD” If you can imagine the steam coming out my ears like a cartoon character!!!!
I asked him how many of the Black and Milds he sold at 7-11 to white people.
He said “Not many.”
I then replied “Don’t you think it is in
teresting that the name is BLACK and MILD, they picked Black people and named it MILD to keep blacks hooked!!!”
He was pretty mad and happy to take the pamphlet from DC Tobacco Free Families in my carry-on to take to his friends.
(the photo to the right is a random guy that I found when I googled Black and Mild images- basically he doesn’t look very cool to me!)

I was thrilled with the recent Supreme Court Ruling on Light Cigarettes!
According to Greg Stohr of Bloomberg.com

Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) — Smokers can sue over the marketing of “light” cigarettes, the US Supreme Court ruled in a decision that bolsters billions of dollars in claims against Altria Group’s Philip Morris USA and other tobacco companies.

The justices, voting 5-4, said a federal labeling law doesn’t shield cigarette makers from suits accusing them of deceiving consumers by describing cigarettes as “light” or “low tar.” The high court also said federal oversight of cigarette testing didn’t preclude those lawsuits.

Light-cigarette suits represent probably the most significant legal threat facing the tobacco industry, with dozens of smoker suits against Philip Morris, Reynolds American’s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and other cigarette makers. Lights account for more than 80 percent of the U.S. market, according to federal figures. . .

Media Relations from Altria (Philip Morris Parent Company) said the decision was “Manageable” HA! Manageable?????

KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT MANAGEABLE!!!!

The Hip-Hop Generation

I met these nice young men at a CVS that I was surveying in regards to the “Save Lives Free the Condoms Coalition” (do we see a common thread lately? :) and one young man had a Black and Mild in his little hand and like a hawk I spotted it and chased him down the aisle (not literally- just walked fast). After going through the pamphlet (mentioned below in the blog) and discussing the risks, he promised he would rethink purchasing another black and mild.
After working through the smoking situation I was quite impressed with these young men- a couple are finishing up high school, some are working, and a couple are college focusing in Art! I was telling these young men about my blog and I said a lot of my posts sometimes can be frankly depressing so they would be a breath of fresh air! I feel special they thought I was pretty cool too- they insisted to have a photo with me! On facebook they wrote a few comments about me that I thought were a hoot! “i love her:)” “Lls… that’s my new bestfriend…=]” and this last comment is what excites me the most!!!!!! “I hope u have fun out there…maybe 1 day we can help u”- and of course I was so excited to tell them that we [public health people] would love for them to help out! This is what it is all about- youth connecting with youth!

DC Tobacco Free Families Conference 2008

DC Tobacco Free Families Conference was held Friday September 26, 2008 in DC. Frankly, it was the best conference I have ever been to! It was not only a great networking tool- but it cut through the fluff of trying to politically correct but still sensitive to discuss the real issues of smoking in the district. Clearly the majority of the residents in DC are African American or Black. I was very impressed by every presentation and I will be doing some various posts on various lectures but I wanted to get a few pictures and videos up about the amazing teens that presented!
Team Champions which is an organization that empowers the youth of today for tomorrow. Please check out their website!

What are the chances I met this young lady- Ashley Blakeney when returning from “Condom Day” or Community Outreach Day with MWPHA on the bus back to Anacostia Station- she went to Ballou High School, was a flag girl in the Ballou Marching Band, in the Ballou Documentary film, and helped create the BEST Black and Mild literature with Team Champions to hand out to the Youth of Today about how Black and Milds will kill the you! She also is in Nursing school at UDC and received a Bill Gates scholarship!!!!!! WOW!!!! another hero!

Here is the pamphlet that they made! I am so thrilled because now when I have been chasing kids down on the street I have been able to give them this pamphlet and they have been mortified! Team Champions did an awesome job! This is only a glimpse of the talent they have!

This young man “Crucial Thoughtz” is so great! I know I am not going to do him justice when I say that I really love what he raps about (pretty sure that is not how the kids would give him a “shout out” that does not even sound right when I say it!) – not smoking, peace on the streets, and frankly a good beat- which honestly I can’t say about most- for anyone that knows me I am very anti- BET and rappers that encourage poor behavior of the youth of today! So thank you Paul aka Crucial Thoughtz! I also met him at Safeway! DC just seems to be getting smaller and smaller! Keep your eyes out for him because he is going to be in some anti-smoking PSA’s!!!!
