Inauguration Day is On its Way. . . .

What are you most excited about?
The actual Inauguration. . .

or. . .

Please make a few comments, tell me WHAT you think!

I have to say that I am excited to have been “picked” (along with thousands of others to volunteer) and you KNOW when they called me and said “Do you own any formal wear?” of course my answer was “YES!” Do you think I owned any these days with the current economic state? The answer was NO. However, my mother the moderate republican (I know I used to be one too) took me straight to the Macy’s sale rack and I found a stunning black dress! I am sure that because I bought the dress I will be put on the clean up crew after on the National Mall or something, but I WILL BE WEARING THE DRESS!!!!

Separately of course I am just so thrilled to be in our Nation’s Capitol to Witness the great event!
I have to admit I am also excited for the following:
I am am proud owner of the Barack Obama Commemorative Smartrip Card (I had a google alert on it and was all stressed out that I wouldn’t get one!)

I hope to see Gordon Sumner aka Sting and invite him over. . . and I tell you. . . I just think Rihanna has got to be the most gorgeous woman alive!!! Do you think she would like to hang out?

Also, if anyone hears about the following I would like to know: Snoop, Bono, Bea Arthur or frankly any of the Golden Girls and Fran Drescher. That is my random Hollywood list and out of sorts for my blog but I had to mix it up a little!

Utah’s Last Call on Cigs December 31st 2008, or was it?

Well the public had to find out at some point what did the “public health Regulator” do on New Year’s Eve? Well. . . I couldn’t help myself I picked a bar in downtown Salt Lake and went to check out to see if they actually followed the smoking ban on bars or shall we say “private clubs for members” or as I believe the policy states: Taverns. In Utah bars are basically illegal, EVERYONE has to pay a cover. . . ya- wow!

Anyway, it was really interesting or aggravating in my case reading articles and blogs prior to the ban, in fact it was unreal. The “arguments” were unreal. There was a guy on one of the forums who worked in a restaurant in Utah for something like 35 years who had lung cancer and had to have half of his lung removed and there was some guy who kept arguing with him that it wasn’t caused by secondhand smoke. It was frankly unreal almost like the twilight zone.

Here is an excerpt about the ban details from the Salt Lake Tribune:

While the timing may not have been convenient for New Year’s Eve revelers, said Utah Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program spokesman David Neville, people are expected to walk outside to smoke after midnight.
“It’s the perfect New Year’s resolution,” Neville said, adding if people need help quitting, they can call 1-888-567-TRUTH or go to utah.quitnet.com.
Under state law, tavern owners are expected to tell patrons to put out their cigarettes or smoke outside, Neville said. If a customer refuses, then local police or health officials should be called.
A bar owner who allows smoking inside could be fined up to $5,000, Neville said. He expects most enforcement will arise from anonymous tips.
Several Salt Lake City bar and club owners are slightly apprehensive about what the new regulation will bring Thursday.
Because he owns a private club and his customers are required to buy membersh
ips, Rob Eddington of Murphy’s Bar & Grill said he thinks it should be up to him whether to allow smoking.
“What makes it private?” he asked, adding he hopes Utah will get rid of membership rules.
Charlie Newman, who books bands at Bar Deluxe, said the South Main Street venue experimented six months ago by banning smoking after a musical artist asked for a ban on smoking during his concert.
“I’ve heard some say they are going somewhere else because [other places] have smoking,” Newman said. “I’ve never heard anyone come here to say they come here because it’s nonsmoking.”
Others don’t seem too worried.
“I’m not really sure if it will affect business,” said Will Sartain, co-owner of smoke-free Kilby Court and Urban Lounge, which allows smoking. “It seems to have worked out fine in other places. People seem to like drinking regardless of whether they can smoke or not.”

I visited Port O’ Call a bar that has been around for ages that actually will be torn down soon because it has been claimed as eminent domain by the Federal Government for a new Courthouse. I actually feel for the owner who is a really nice guy and down-to-earth. I always support the small business owner aside from his misguided and WHACK ideas about secondhand smoke.
He did NOT enforce the smoking ban at MIDNIGHT his excuse was that it would have been “Too difficult” and a “hazard” to remove the smokers from the building.
I asked him “What did the did the Department of Health give you to prepare for the ban?”
He stated “A couple of window clings and some information about the risks of secondhand smoke”
I also asked him “Are you worried that one day your employee’s might sue you? You know their are many class action lawsuits among airline flight attendants soon it will be casino employee’s etc”
He said “No, we are one big family” (you know I was chuckling, well LAUGHING my A%& off on the inside, I wonder if he will believe that when his employees are sick and their children need to be taken care of. . . )
I also had the nerve to ask him “Do you smoke?”
Anyone want to guess his answer? . . . yes he does. . . .

If Port O’ Call is a “Family” the owner should consider the following of his employee’s by going smokefree he will:
Reduce risk of lung cancer. Employees exposed to secondhand smoke on thejob are 12% to 19% more likely to get lung cancer.
Reduce heart attacks. Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of a
heart attack by 25% to 35%.
Reduce heart disease.
Reduce upper respiratory infections.
(All toolkit information and statistics can be found at the Utah Tobacco Prevention and Control Program Website)

The below video shows just a little bit of me on the streets of Salt Lake, I had hoped for more, but it was just too cold and I really don’t know the “scene” in Salt Lake because I could never go out because it was was too smokey.

U92 Sponsors The Truth Against Tobacco AND Aztec Highway Tobacco Shop. . . PUBLIC HEALTH REGULATOR on the CASE

You can imagine how mortified I was when I was cruising around my old hood (please it is no hood) in my prized ’93 Mercury Tracer (color teal) trying to feel the love of home via a little hip-hop, so I turned on the local hip-hop station U92 “Utah’s Beat.” The DJ’s have always been Substandard and frankly have always tried too hard, but I figured how hard is it to put on the top 25 Hip-Hop songs and over play them? As I was jamming out in my car I kept hearing this deplorable commercial for Aztec Highway a Tobacco Head shop in Salt Lake City.

U92 literally plays during EVERY commercial break. The Commercial said “Come in for some KILLER DEALS” yes LUNG KILLER deals. . .
“Pick up your Free Rewards Card to win a free water pipe on new years”
So. . . I couldn’t resist.
Not only did I visit their website which was a laugh, I would post Screen Captures of Aztec’s Website but you do have to certify that you are 18 to enter. . However, I did find a video they uploaded from YouTube of some group they support it was the funniest thing I have seen in ages!

I also took a trip to the Satan’s lair. There was a very nice young man working there, and then one of the most pathetic tools who bless his heart must be a chain smoker he couldn’t be over 23 or 24 and his lungs sounded like a man who had been smoking for 30 years. When I walked in the credit card machine wasn’t working and basically he GAVE the two guys in the store the TOBACCO PRODUCTS for FREE!!!! His exact words were “It’s your lucky day!”

Too bad he was unaware of this Utah Tobacco Law:
76-10-112. Prohibition of distribution of cigarettes or other tobacco products — Exceptions.
(1) Except as provided in Subsection (2), it is unlawful for a manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer to give or distribute cigarettes or other tobacco products in this state without charge. Any person who violates this subsection is guilty of a class C misdemeanor for the first offense and a class B misdemeanor for any subsequent offense.
(2) Cigarettes and other tobacco products may be distributed to adults without charge at professional conventions where the general public is excluded.
(3) The prohibition described in Subsection (1) does not apply to retailers, manufacturers, or distributors who give cigarettes or other tobacco products to persons of legal age upon their purchase of cigarettes or other tobacco products.

Little did he know that I recorded my entire experience on my blackberry, so I have 20 minutes of my time spent at Aztec Highway. I also applied for my “Free Rewards Card” and the tool didn’t even ID me!!! The nice guy was going to ID me and the tool said “No way. . we don’t need to ID her”

After my lovely experience at Aztec I hopped onto the U92 Website and I hoped that my eyes deceived me . . . but the after being at Aztec U92 really put the icing on the cake.
At the end of September U92 sponsored a Truth Against Tobacco event at Hillcrest Junior High School! Today they still have a banner of their home page with a “Picture of the Day” sponsored by The Truth campaign and yet a link to Aztec about their New Years Giveway

It seems to me that Mr. Kevin Cruise who was quoted on the U92 website as dealing with “legal public affair issues (smart guy)” would at the very least have the moral conviction to call U92 out on their CLEAR conflict of interest!!!! Oh by the way Kevin your EEO, and Privacy disclaimers path file links are dead.

Ballou, A Documentary Film!

For those that think that DC Public Schools don’t have a lot to offer. . . think again. The Ballou High School Marching Band is nothing less of AMAZING!
I have personally exchanged various e-mails with the Producer of “Ballou, A Documentary Film,” Casey Callister and I have been humbled by his passion not only to promote the documentary but more so to promote the Ballou High School Marching Band. Because of the film the marching band has been able to have more publicity and be recognized by President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Colin Powell, Reverend Jesse Jackson to name a few.
Ballou, A Documentary Film also gives a very clue picture of the reality of Washington DC!

The documentary also portrays the amazing time, effort, love, sweat, tears that is put into the band by Mr. Darrell Watson the Ballou Senior High School Band Director! Also a Ballou Graduate Mr. Watson fights for the students at Ballou to reach higher, and even though the students are literally fighting against all odds he makes it work, does his “thing” to lead by example and make opportunities for his students!

Make sure you check out the trailer of the movie and the recently released “Welcome to Washington DC” just in time for the 2009 Inauguration!

If Utah is not locking up Condoms. . .

. . . then DC ought to get the picture! Again. . . with 1 out of 20 Washington DC residents suffering HIV/AIDS it seems that CVS would make buying condoms as easy as possible. . .

(please check out http://savelivesfreethecondoms.blogspot.com for more information about CVS and their policies)

I am home for the holidays and of course I have perused the local Smith’s Food and Drug/Marketplace (A Kroger’s Company) and NO, there condoms are not locked up!
It is unclear if Kroger’s has a national corporate policy but you can be reassured that I am looking into it!
If Utah one of the most conservative states in the nation where people would feel like they would need to steal condoms in fear of embarrassment are NOT locking up their condoms. . . CVS should really re-think their policies. .
FURTHERMORE, Magnum condoms are nearly $3 less!
Shame on CVS and their high prices marketed directly to the black community.
