NWtoSE.com
since 2008
The idea of NWtoSE.com evolved when I was attending graduate school at The George Washington University School of Public Health and I noticed how many students never left campus to understand how different life is from NW to SW to NE to SE.
In my 5 years in DC I have learned a couple of things about the “urea.” “What you know about that?” is a phrase I have come to know and love. Washingtonians are always surprised when I discuss knowledge of demographic shifts over the years in DC, or the notorious drug kingpin Rayful Edmond (how could I not? I live in LeDroit Park), discuss my hope for the youngins, speak to my support of the Ballou SH marching band, or even discuss why I can only listen to about 25 minutes of Go-go- but always miss it when I leave DC.
My passion and background is public health and safety. My #1 passion in DC is supporting Men’s Health. Through volunteering in the District passing out DOH condoms and discussing ways to quit smoking I discovered a more pressing issue, Reentry. I literally meet men in a street outreach setting that are typically chillin on the block, in the grocery store, etc and do what I can by providing information about social services including mental and physical health checkups, assisting with resumes, job applications and really anything and everything you would and wouldn’t imagine. In my search to become a paid advocate to support men’s health I have met opposition from every stakeholder imaginable in the District telling me to “pick something else to do with your degree and skills,” but I am persistent because of the need of “my peoples” =grown typically black men ages 25 and over from and living in DC. Don’t worry I have supporters too, most of them the men I serve and a few other advocates in the District.
I also serve as the volunteer Public Safety Chair for the Civic Association in LeDroit Park (they do not endorse this blog of course), unofficially enforce public health codes, hang out with seniors, support the police (usually), serve on committees, attend 3-4 DC meetings about issues in the District a week, and like I said I am looking for employment.
