U92 Sponsors The Truth Against Tobacco AND Aztec Highway Tobacco Shop. . . PUBLIC HEALTH REGULATOR on the CASE

You can imagine how mortified I was when I was cruising around my old hood (please it is no hood) in my prized ’93 Mercury Tracer (color teal) trying to feel the love of home via a little hip-hop, so I turned on the local hip-hop station U92 “Utah’s Beat.” The DJ’s have always been Substandard and frankly have always tried too hard, but I figured how hard is it to put on the top 25 Hip-Hop songs and over play them? As I was jamming out in my car I kept hearing this deplorable commercial for Aztec Highway a Tobacco Head shop in Salt Lake City.

U92 literally plays during EVERY commercial break. The Commercial said “Come in for some KILLER DEALS” yes LUNG KILLER deals. . .
“Pick up your Free Rewards Card to win a free water pipe on new years”
So. . . I couldn’t resist.
Not only did I visit their website which was a laugh, I would post Screen Captures of Aztec’s Website but you do have to certify that you are 18 to enter. . However, I did find a video they uploaded from YouTube of some group they support it was the funniest thing I have seen in ages!

I also took a trip to the Satan’s lair. There was a very nice young man working there, and then one of the most pathetic tools who bless his heart must be a chain smoker he couldn’t be over 23 or 24 and his lungs sounded like a man who had been smoking for 30 years. When I walked in the credit card machine wasn’t working and basically he GAVE the two guys in the store the TOBACCO PRODUCTS for FREE!!!! His exact words were “It’s your lucky day!”

Too bad he was unaware of this Utah Tobacco Law:
76-10-112. Prohibition of distribution of cigarettes or other tobacco products — Exceptions.
(1) Except as provided in Subsection (2), it is unlawful for a manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer to give or distribute cigarettes or other tobacco products in this state without charge. Any person who violates this subsection is guilty of a class C misdemeanor for the first offense and a class B misdemeanor for any subsequent offense.
(2) Cigarettes and other tobacco products may be distributed to adults without charge at professional conventions where the general public is excluded.
(3) The prohibition described in Subsection (1) does not apply to retailers, manufacturers, or distributors who give cigarettes or other tobacco products to persons of legal age upon their purchase of cigarettes or other tobacco products.

Little did he know that I recorded my entire experience on my blackberry, so I have 20 minutes of my time spent at Aztec Highway. I also applied for my “Free Rewards Card” and the tool didn’t even ID me!!! The nice guy was going to ID me and the tool said “No way. . we don’t need to ID her”
You can check out my entire experience at Aztec Highway on video here. . .

After my lovely experience at Aztec I hopped onto the U92 Website and I hoped that my eyes deceived me . . . but the after being at Aztec U92 really put the icing on the cake.
At the end of September U92 sponsored a Truth Against Tobacco event at Hillcrest Junior High School! Today they still have a banner of their home page with a “Picture of the Day” sponsored by The Truth campaign and yet a link to Aztec about their New Years Giveway

It seems to me that Mr. Kevin Cruise who was quoted on the U92 website as dealing with “legal public affair issues (smart guy)” would at the very least have the moral conviction to call U92 out on their CLEAR conflict of interest!!!! Oh by the way Kevin your EEO, and Privacy disclaimers path file links are dead.

Ballou, A Documentary Film!

For those that think that DC Public Schools don’t have a lot to offer. . . think again. The Ballou High School Marching Band is nothing less of AMAZING!
I have personally exchanged various e-mails with the Producer of “Ballou, A Documentary Film,” Casey Callister and I have been humbled by his passion not only to promote the documentary but more so to promote the Ballou High School Marching Band. Because of the film the marching band has been able to have more publicity and be recognized by President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Colin Powell, Reverend Jesse Jackson to name a few.
Ballou, A Documentary Film also gives a very clue picture of the reality of Washington DC!

The documentary also portrays the amazing time, effort, love, sweat, tears that is put into the band by Mr. Darrell Watson the Ballou Senior High School Band Director! Also a Ballou Graduate Mr. Watson fights for the students at Ballou to reach higher, and even though the students are literally fighting against all odds he makes it work, does his “thing” to lead by example and make opportunities for his students!

Make sure you check out the trailer of the movie and the recently released “Welcome to Washington DC” just in time for the 2009 Inauguration!

If Utah is not locking up Condoms. . .

. . . then DC ought to get the picture! Again. . . with 1 out of 20 Washington DC residents suffering HIV/AIDS it seems that CVS would make buying condoms as easy as possible. . .

(please check out http://savelivesfreethecondoms.blogspot.com for more information about CVS and their policies)

I am home for the holidays and of course I have perused the local Smith’s Food and Drug/Marketplace (A Kroger’s Company) and NO, there condoms are not locked up!
It is unclear if Kroger’s has a national corporate policy but you can be reassured that I am looking into it!
If Utah one of the most conservative states in the nation where people would feel like they would need to steal condoms in fear of embarrassment are NOT locking up their condoms. . . CVS should really re-think their policies. .
FURTHERMORE, Magnum condoms are nearly $3 less!
Shame on CVS and their high prices marketed directly to the black community.

NW to West. . .

I am back in Utah (LOWEST SMOKING RATE IN THE COUNTRY!) for a few weeks for the holidays and of course I can’t stay away from my usual Tobacco Control/Condom Access.
I connected in Denver on my way to Salt Lake (which I decided to name “Vanillaland” coming from “Chocolate City”) I was shocked to see that cigarettes were sold in the Airport. Maybe I never really paid attention to the sales of Tobacco products in the airport but o
f course I couldn’t help out strike up a conversation with the cashiers. Two nice young men of the Ethiopian decent, one of the young man’s mother was actually from the DC area! He was telling me how he used to work at 7-11 and sold Black and Milds and how he thought that they were NOT dangerous and DID not cause cancer.

I asked him “Why do think that that these mini-cigars are not harmful?”
He stated “They are called MILD” If you can imagine the steam coming out my ears like a cartoon character!!!!
I asked him how many of the Black and Milds he sold at 7-11 to white people.
He said “Not many.”
I then replied “Don’t you think it is in
teresting that the name is BLACK and MILD, they picked Black people and named it MILD to keep blacks hooked!!!”
He was pretty mad and happy to take the pamphlet from DC Tobacco Free Families in my carry-on to take to his friends.
(the photo to the right is a random guy that I found when I googled Black and Mild images- basically he doesn’t look very cool to me!)

I was thrilled with the recent Supreme Court Ruling on Light Cigarettes!
According to Greg Stohr of Bloomberg.com

Dec. 15 (Bloomberg) — Smokers can sue over the marketing of “light” cigarettes, the US Supreme Court ruled in a decision that bolsters billions of dollars in claims against Altria Group’s Philip Morris USA and other tobacco companies.

The justices, voting 5-4, said a federal labeling law doesn’t shield cigarette makers from suits accusing them of deceiving consumers by describing cigarettes as “light” or “low tar.” The high court also said federal oversight of cigarette testing didn’t preclude those lawsuits.

Light-cigarette suits represent probably the most significant legal threat facing the tobacco industry, with dozens of smoker suits against Philip Morris, Reynolds American’s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and other cigarette makers. Lights account for more than 80 percent of the U.S. market, according to federal figures. . .

Media Relations from Altria (Philip Morris Parent Company) said the decision was “Manageable” HA! Manageable?????

KILLING PEOPLE IS NOT MANAGEABLE!!!!
