DC Night Club and Lounge "The Republic" Not so KOOL

I was ready for another night out on the town with my public health ladies. We were looking good and one of my friends had sent me a text message earlier in the day letting me know the club that we would be checking out on U street would be:

The Republic Night Club and Lounge at

1355 U Street, NW DC

http://www.washingtonpost.com/gog/bars-clubs/the-republic,792247.html#readerReviews

My friend told me to text “313131″ and the word “gratis” before midnight to get in free. I thought the whole process was pretty random but what do I know I am really not up on the club scene. I texted the number without asking too many questions, who doesn’t want to get into the club free? Especially when you are BROKE. I received the following text in a reply message:

“NBA BLOWOUT Deshawn Stevenenson & The Wizards MANSION FRI The Republic 1355 U ST NW FREE CIROC 9-11*FREE B412 W/TXT* Reply STOP GRATIS to end”

I knew things were bad to start off when the line outside the door was short. The next thing I know the bouncer out of the blue said “are you hitting on me?” when I was stating the fact that is was cold and “why aren’t you letting us in?” Finally all 10 of us walked in the door and were asked for our text messages, and greeted by a Russian Bride type dressed in what I thought had to be the most tacky, slutty looking dress with a large “O” like shape in her dress, she asked for my e-mail for “further events” and without even thinking I signed my name. Little did she know or the Club. . . the rage and the knowledge I had of what I was about to see with my own eyes.

Trust me when I say the video above was NOT like The Republic. There were not that many people in the club. The KOOL paraphelnia was limited to what I could see as far as napkin holders, green lights and a russian mail order bride in an awful dress if I had been on my game in the beginning I would have had my photo taken with her.

My friends and I walked upstairs and I was as usual the only white person in the crowd. (which is VERY pertinent in this post) I walked over to the bar to get a sprite (yes really, a sprite) and then it all started flooding in. . . like the great floods, my blood started to boil and steam started to blow from my ears, I looked down and what did I see??
KOOL
Napkin holders
all the green started flooding in like lighting. . . the chick at the front door. . . I ran down and said

“Give me that list- I REFUSE TO SUBSCRIBE to

LUNG CANCER and one of the #1 Killer of AFRICAN AMERICANS”

I then scratched my name off the list and she looked at me and she looked me with the dumbest look on her face.

The rest of the night I chatted with the bouncers (who were frankly awesome, hard working down-to-earth), the MC Doug E.D (two thumbs down and then some) who under a sea of green lights just made me more angry. I also chatted with his promoter who seemed to not know that KOOL was one of the sponsors he said:

“well I don’t smoke.” I then continued to discuss menthol use among the black community.

He said “well I am just trying to promote good music” and I said “well you have already failed at that. . “ and I said “Are you black?” He said “Well clearly you are intelligent, obviously.” I then said take a look at the crowd, what does your demographic tonight appear to be?” he answered “black.” I continued by explaining my disgust and how I would never return and to watch for this post.

On a separate note I personally did not notice DeShawn Stevenson but there was a “special VIP section” where I could smell Menthol (which any of my friends will attest to I am like a blood hound when it comes to menthols) fumes where he could have been chillin‘ but my concern is that the Washington Wizards are on board with DC Tobacco Free Families in their efforts to help the residents of DC quit smoking. SO WHY WAS HIS NAME ON THE EVENT?

DPR Set to Launch District’s Tobacco Free Sports Campaign with DOH, American Lung Association of DC and Caron Butler”

In my heart I was giving a big shout to Ms. Wright from the National African American Tobacco Prevention Network and her courage to speak out against the Tobacco Companies and knowing what I know now from her workshop on Tobacco Marketing to the Black Community that I attended in DC a month ago, I could not be silent. That is the reason for this very explicit post and the reason I will do my best to distribute to educate my friends and DC residents about the evils of the Tobacco companies. I am mortified, disgusted and I find it deplorable that any club in DC that serves a predominately black club goer would perpetuate one of the #1 killers in the black community.

FORMER TOBACCO INDUSTRY MANAGER SPEAKS OUT…

Follow the Signs (FTS) is a training program that raises awareness about how Big Tobacco specifically targets Black communities. It was developed by NAATPN’s West Region Director, La Tanisha Wright. Ms. Wright is a former tobacco industry manager. She has expertise in tobacco marketing, merchandising and advertising.

Interestingly enough I found this on the ground today the surgeon generals warning was so small and the silver lettering blended in with the box:
SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING CIGARETTE SMOKE CONTAINS CARBON MONOXIDE. What about everything else???

Here is what Mr. RJ Reynolds states from his company website:

TOBACCO USE & HEALTH

  • Smoking causes serious disease.
  • Nicotine in tobacco products is addictive but is not considered a significant threat to health.
  • No tobacco product has been shown to be safe.
  • An individual’s level of risk for serious disease is significantly affected by the type of tobacco product used as well as the manner and frequency of use.

Hopefully those involved in last nights events that will be alerted of my experience will take notice to recent news in menthol related Tobacco Control:

http://www.trdrp.org/burningIssues/1008/BurningIssues-menthol1008.asp

“Today, even though Kool has receded in prominence and Newport has ascended as the main menthol brand, still African Americans disproportionately smoke menthols. . .”

“ . . . by failing to ban menthol, the bill caves to the financial interests of tobacco companies and discriminates against African Americans—the segment of our population at greatest risk for the killing and crippling smoking-related diseases. It sends a message that African American youngsters are valued less than white youngsters.

“To make the pending tobacco legislation truly effective, menthol cigarettes should be treated the same as other flavored cigarettes. Menthol should be banned so that it no longer serves as a product the tobacco companies can use to lure African American children.

“We do everything we can to protect our children in America, especially our white children. It’s time to do the same for all children.”

Gearing Up for World AIDS Day- December 1st

I am personally so thrilled that Government has joined the Social Marketing, New Media World! When I received a forward from a member of the Metropolitan Washington Public Health Association (MWPHA) encouraging bloggers to check out AIDS.gov. I jumped to the site, and was so excited to see various different applications of new media here are a few that I was the most excited about:
Various Widgets applicatins that are available as well as other forms of new media!

(Please refer to my sidebar for the AIDS.gov widgets discussed in this post)

Facebook Groups, Myspace, Twitter (I joined twitter after going to the AIDS.gov website), to name a few new media applications were all created to further AIDS awareness.

Text messages to locate testing sites for HIV/AIDS:

To find HIV Test Centers near you Text: Your Zip Code To: KnowIt (566948) www.hivtest.org
Promoting HIV Testing

We need your help to promote HIV testing!

Issue
In the United States, an estimated 1 million people are living with HIV; of these, approximately 25 percent are unaware of their HIV infection and are at increased risk for infecting others.

Goal
Increase awareness about the importance of HIV testing to help improve the health of those most at risk for HIV and to prevent future infections.

Strategy
Use text messaging to promote HIV testing. Mobile phone users can send a text message with their zip code to “KNOWIT” (566948). Within seconds, they will receive a text message identifying an HIV testing site near them. This mobile phone service connects users with CDC’s testing database found at
www.HIVtest.org.

How You Can Help
Promote HIV testing by adding a KNOWIT web badge to your website — just copy the html code below and paste it into your site.

The Website also gave the “haters” or the people that were maybe skeptical of the impact of blogging information about the scope of how many people blogging can reach!

Here is a brief description of what the site discussed:

The Power of Bloggers

According to the blog search engine, Technorati Exit Disclaimer, “blogs are powerful because they allow millions of people to easily publish and share their ideas, and millions more to read and respond.” There are nearly 113 million blogs Exit Disclaimer, and an estimated 13.6 million health-related blogs Exit Disclaimer. A recent study by Envision Solutions, Inc. Exit Disclaimer found that nearly half of all bloggers in the U.S. wrote about health at least once last year. There is tremendous potential to reach millions of people this year with HIV/AIDS information.

Tony told us that initiatives like Bloggers Unite “nurture social media into being a proactive and positive tool to raise awareness.” He also mentioned that they’ve seen an increase in participation with each Blogger’s Unite event, “because bloggers enjoy coming together as individuals to do good.”

David said, “With an issue like poverty or HIV/AIDS, different bloggers will highlight different topics and present different points of view. As an educator, I am most excited about this aspect of the World AIDS Day project. I will encourage my students to read and consider a number of the Bloggers Unite posts. I’m sure that the ensuing discussions we have as a class will be wonderful. And, hopefully, some of the students will take action as a result of our conversations.”

32nd Great American Smokeout- this Thursday, Nov. 20- its like another Holiday for me!

The Great American Smokeout grew out of a small-town event in Massachusetts in 1971, in which high-school guidance counselor Arthur Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for one day and donate the money they would otherwise have spent on cigarettes to a college scholarship fund. Then, in 1974, Lynn Smith, editor of Minnesota’s Monticello Times, organized the state’s first observance of “D-Day,” or “Don’t Smoke Day.” Starting in November, 1976, the California Division of the American Cancer Society (ACS) adopted the idea and ultimately re-christened the event the Great American Smokeout, successfully convincing nearly a million smokers to quit for one day even in the event’s first year. Soon the event went nationwide under the sponsorship of ACS. (The Minnesota event continued as “D-Day” well into the 1980s, and the state even added a “Quit-and-Win” contest component for a time.)

Participation couldn’t be simpler: smokers quit for the 24 hours of the Smokeout. Even those who do not quit permanently will have learned that it is possible to quit for a day—and, perhaps, for the rest their lives.

The fact is that 70% of US smokers say they want to quit, and smoking cessation has substantial and immediate health benefits. Smokers who use proven interventions, such as assistance from a healthcare provider, FDA-approved medications, and behavioral counseling, greatly increase their likelihood of quitting permanently. Smokers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and certain US territories who want help in quitting can access 1-800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) for free telephone counseling or referrals.

The Great American Smokeout also draws attention to the many other proven interventions that increase smoking cessation: reducing out-of-pocket cessation treatment costs; establishing smoke-free environments in homes, workplaces and restaurants; increasing the price of cigarettes; and mass media campaigns to inform and motivate tobacco users to quit.

Nearest Metro Stops: Metro Center and McPherson Square

Andrew has been making large format photographs for the past 10 years. Using a time-honored photographic process with large format view cameras, Andrew creates black and white silver gelatin prints that combine the virtues of the starkly literal and the rigorously abstract. Contact printed to the original size of the negatives and hand worked throughout the developing and printing process, his photographs are crisp, detailed, and intimate, fully maintaining the integrity of the negative. He focuses not on a particular subject, but instead investigates evocative forms and images that exist within the natural world, accentuating overlooked beauty and challenging the viewer’s perception of reality.

I was doing a little research “Public Health and the Arts” and here is the article that I read, and frankly I thought it was pretty hip!

“Deteriorating physical features of urban environments can negatively influence public health. Dilapidated environments and urban blight tend to promote alienation and can be associated with social disorder, vandalism, crime, drug abuse, traffic violations, and littering, which in turn affects health and well-being.

In the late 1990s, the Sunnyside neighborhood in Portland, Ore, was plagued by many of these problems. In an attempt to invigorate neighborhood stewardship, the community organized and created a public gathering place; together, they painted a gigantic sunflower in the middle of an intersection and installed several interactive art features.

As a result of these collective actions of “place-making,” social capital has increased, thus revitalizing the community, and expanded social networks among residents have stimulated a sense of well-being.”

I think DC has a few buildings, intersections and frankly maybe some designated places in metro tunnels that could really benefit from the arts!
