To Arm or Not?

A couple weeks ago the Foggy Bottom Grocery Store on the George Washington University campus was robbed at gunpoint, the perpetrator made off with $500 cash. . .
Thank goodness no one was hurt!!!!
I think the thing that concerns me the most about this incident is that it was almost like no one in this area thought that someone with a gun was “allowed” to make their way over to “this” area.
After the incident there has been a buzz on campus about “arming” the George Washington University Police. . . of course as a student of public health my friends and I have been discussing the idea and hands down the answer is NO WAY. You may draw you own conclusions by the following crime logs:

GW University Police Training:
Certification Training

  • Defensive Driving
  • Defensive Tactics
  • OCAT (Pepper Spray)
  • PR-24 Baton
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area Campus Public Safety Institute (Eight weeks of Academy training)
  • District of Columbia, Metropolitan Police Department
Academy training for recruit officers lasts for 28 weeks. During the first month, recruit officers live on site at the Academy (excluding weekends). MPD recruit officers complete a full program of physical endurance training, classroom training, and firearms training to prepare them for the challenges of being a police officer. The subjects covered include laws of arrest, search and seizure, criminal law, traffic regulations, human relations, community policing, and ethics. In addition, recruit officers receive skills training in firearms, operation of emergency police vehicles, self-defense, advanced first aid, and much more. MPD officers serve an 18-month probationary period, which includes the 28 weeks spent in the Metropolitan Police Academy.

Basically. . . the typical crime on the George Washington University Campus does not require that of a gun on campus- and I really do believe in this case LESS IS MORE . . . furthermore on any given day there are handfuls of MPD cops . . . one officer told me once “Your area has the most officers in the District because so many jurisdictions are covered. . . ” Personally I can think of ONE University Police Officer that I could trust with a gun, and until then I will risk it with my pepper spray, my defense training, and all jokes aside my street sense.

    "Music Make You Lose Control"

For the first time in way too long I went out dancing to celebrate my friends birthday! At a local lounge in NW, DC. Indulj® is located on U Street just off the metro and frankly I have not had such a great time in probably 4 years. I owe most of that to two factors:
    1. The people I was with
    2. The DJ
I asked the DJ “What is your name?? I just love the music you are playing!”
(which I am sure there would have been a more hip way of saying that) and he said
“It is Travis Bond” and I said “What is your DJ name?” and he said “That’s my name, I tried to come up with something but I just stuck with my name!”
I WAS JUST THRILLED!!!! (for those of you that know me- you know that names like Young Larry, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe. . . etc. crack me up in general)
Travis played a great mix from the new stuff like Lil Wayne (whom I can’t stand- but I realize everyone else loves him) to some of my favorites from the 90′s. . . the youth of today have no respect for artists like Color Me Badd, Kriss Kross, Will Smith, Boyz II Men, and TLC to name a few

For over 10 years DJ Trav Bond has stimulated thousands of crowds with his energetic style. His trademark technique of Mixing, Hits, Hits and more Hits sets new standards in every venue he rocks.

The blend of his advanced turntable skills and incredible record selection have provided opportunities to perform at multiple “Major Concert” shows, captivating crowds of more then 20,000 and opening for artists such as 50 Cent/G-Unit, TI, and The Roots to name a few. In 2007 he was selected by Terrence J and Rocsi of BET’s 106 and Park as their official DJ specializing in Step Shows, Concert hosting and more. Trav Bond as he affectionately knows as, short for Travis Bond, has since grown to be one of the most respected DJs in and around the national event circuits with his recent selection as the DJ for the Stomp The Yard National Step Show Tour.

Trav is currently focused on choosing a permanent radio home combing his past experience as an on-air radio personality and an upper echelon mixer to the airwaves. He brings a humbleness to his environment that is unparalleled. The crowd ALWAYS comes first attitude has carried him to venues from Los Angeles to Turks and Caicos. With DJ Trav Bond having a good time is not an option.

By the end of the night my feet needed to be amputated and I was dead tired- I reminisced back to my college days of “going out” every week “busting” (ha ha ha) a few dance moves on the make shift dance floor at whatever “Animal House” fraternity was sponsoring the party. I brought the “fan” move back to the dance scene this weekend- a move specifically designed for the hot, sweaty club scene. It occurred to me that maybe my weekly dance workouts were actually helping me keep slim and trim. I like to refer to my college years as “the thinner years” due to the fact that I weighed about 60 pounds lighter than I do now. . . the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests:

Physical Activity for a Healthy Weight

Regular physical activity is important for good health, and it’s especially important if you’re trying to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight.

When losing weight, more physical activity increases the number of calories your body uses for energy or “burns off.” The burning of calories through physical activity, combined with reducing the number of calories you eat, creates a “calorie deficit” that results in weight loss.

Most weight loss occurs because of decreased caloric intake. However, evidence shows the only way to maintain weight loss is to be engaged in regular physical activity.

Most importantly, physical activity reduces risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes beyond that produced by weight reduction alone.

    • Maintain weight.
    • Reduce high blood pressure.
    • Reduce risk for type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and several forms of cancer.
    • Reduce arthritis pain and associated disability.
    • Reduce risk for osteoporosis and falls.
    • Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

So I think you can have a really great time at “da club” and a workout doesn’t have to be Richard Simmons Sweatin‘ to the Oldies . . .

Jana suggests to herself and others. . . find yourself in the club more often!

So a Shout Out to Young Larry, Rinaldi and my friend Kafui for celebrating their Birthdays. . . from “Utah” Peace Out** for now!

**I guess the youth of today are not saying “Peace Out” anymore- or so I was told on the street

Condom Quest: 2008 We’ll Go to Great Lengths for Magnums®

For anyone that has spent time on the streets of Southeast doing HIV/AIDS outreach through condom distribution as well information about testing sites etc- you are familiar that the condom of choice is Trojan Magnum®- for those of you that don’t know about this particular condom it is made for the “larger” gentlemen. Even though the health department provides Durex XXL® (which is the same size as a Magnum®) the trusted brand is Trojan®. The health department can’t afford to buy Magnum® in bulk as they are nearly double the price.

Most of us have heard it all from “Durex and Lifestyle pop, break. . .etc etc” so. . . Elena Lumby and myself (Jana Baldwin) Karyn Pomerantz’s groupies discovered that Trojan® is doing a Campus Comedy Tour for undergrads. We barely missed the Trojan® “van” (that distributes information among other fun things in regards to condoms) at GW, so we decided to catch them at Johns Hopkins this last Thursday.

We buckled up into Elena’s VW Yellow Bug with firebolts on the side- two white girls heading to Baltimore which we soon discovered as we were pulling out of her driveway that neither of us had ever been there before! Ha ha ha! Thank goodness for GPS!
(We thought Jordan Carlos was the most funny of all! You can check him out on Comedy Central as Steven Colbert’s “Black Friend”)

Bottom line- we made it to Hopkins found a contact- one of the marketing directors from Trojan® Corporate who told us “we have a 76% market share in the US” and Elena and I said “in the Magnum® condom we are pretty sure you have 100% with the population we work with.” She was unaware of the dire need in DC and the alarming statistics in DC- we came prepared with a letter, statistics, facts about MWPHA and Ms. Mitrano from Trojan® said that there was a large board meeting coming up next week with Trojan that she would be taking our information back to the board to discuss with them how they could partner with our community!

    The Importance of Branding

Even though this story was “fun” and exciting it just goes to show the power of Branding. Dr. Doug Evans, the Department Chair for the Communications and Marketing Track at the George Washington University discusses in his paper on Public Health Branding and how branding can change behavior. I think that knowing the importance of the literal behavior involved with the prevention of HIV/AIDS made me so passionate about finding a direct contact with Trojan®. Clearly the population that the Public Health Officials/Volunteers etc are serving here in DC TRUST the brand name Trojan®. The consumers believe that only with Trojan® they can expect a quality product. My other fear is that what if the consumers are just simply not using a condom if they do not have a Magnum® brand name? This is scary. . . So not only do the consumers trust the product, but since there is a very specific behavior involved with the product- prevention of HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancy, and STD’s it was very important to try and bridge the barrier or frankly in my opinion excuses made by many- but in the same token, Trojan® has done such a good job at making the public trust them that why would you use anything else?

    The Hip-Hop Generation

I met these nice young men at a CVS that I was surveying in regards to the “Save Lives Free the Condoms Coalition” (do we see a common thread lately? :) and one young man had a Black and Mild in his little hand and like a hawk I spotted it and chased him down the aisle (not literally- just walked fast). After going through the pamphlet (mentioned below in the blog) and discussing the risks, he promised he would rethink purchasing another black and mild.
After working through the smoking situation I was quite impressed with these young men- a couple are finishing up high school, some are working, and a couple are college focusing in Art! I was telling these young men about my blog and I said a lot of my posts sometimes can be frankly depressing so they would be a breath of fresh air! I feel special they thought I was pretty cool too- they insisted to have a photo with me! On facebook they wrote a few comments about me that I thought were a hoot! “i love her:)” “Lls… that’s my new bestfriend…=]” and this last comment is what excites me the most!!!!!! “I hope u have fun out there…maybe 1 day we can help u”- and of course I was so excited to tell them that we [public health people] would love for them to help out! This is what it is all about- youth connecting with youth!
